The world around us is not whole; at least, not in the traditional sense. There's enough there for our brains to connect what's missing in our own perception. But ultimately, it is an incomplete picture.In computer graphics, there is a term called draw distance. When rendering a 3D environment, the things close to the viewer are rendered with fine detail. Objects which are far from the viewer are rendered in a lower quality, or not at all.
When I look around me…when I really look…I realize something. It's the reasoning for what seems so off about the people and the places around you. Why memories seem to blur together over time. Because they aren't actually there. They are there to fill in the background.
There is a term for a place that has been curated to imitate natural surroundings for the comfort of an animal.
An artificial habitat.

The universe tends toward total entropy and as a result will self-repair. In doing so, however, byproducts of these repairs are created, often merging with the echoes of the Principal Universe present in the background radiation permeating Earth. The O5 council believes that these byproducts, which we call anomalies, are manifestations of the universe attempting a form of self-preservation.

Anomalous entities, on the surface, appear to be a symptom of the rapid destabilization of the reality fragment. What this does not explain is why these symptoms target our deepest emotions. Fear, compassion, justice, empathy…it is as if anomalies are created intelligently, for the purpose of keeping us distracted from noticing the cracks along the walls of our prison cell.On your first day in the Foundation, you learned a single, pivotal rule: We Secure, Contain, and protect, not destroy. This is for a reason. The destruction of anomalies destabilizes SCP-001, and makes its collapse edge closer.

The life-cycle of SCP-001 is not very long. It originates in 2007 and lasts for 10-20 years before it can no longer self-sustain. If allowed to collapse on its own, the fragment, and everything in it, would cease to exist.
But there is another option. Likened to a controlled demolition, triggering the collapse under controlled circumstances, it is possible to reconstruct, and reset, SCP-001.
Performing the procedure known as the Sisyphus Protocol results in an as-yet-unclassified universal reality-restructuring event. At the conclusion of the procedure, SCP-001 rebuilds itself procedurally, using June 22, 2007 as its algorithmic seed. The resulting iteration of SCP-001 is often different from the previous.
As it is impossible to determine the number of times this has occurred, sequential designation of instances of SCP-001 is considered unnecessary.
